Dry Fuel Storage – MAGNASTOR™

The MAGNASTOR™ (Modular, Advanced Generation, Nuclear All-purpose Storage) System is a new generation of dry, multipurpose spent fuel storage technology. Drawing upon lessons learned from designing, licensing, fabricating, constructing, loading and transporting spent fuel casks, NAC has developed the MAGNASTOR™ System which is the first U.S. NRC-approved multi-purpose canister system capable of storing 37 PWR or 87 BWR assemblies.

The MAGNASTOR™ System is the first U.S. NRC-approved multi-purpose canister system capable of storing 37 PWR or 87 BWR assemblies, which is about 16% and 28% higher than previously licensed high capacity systems for PWR and BWR spent fuel respectively. Petersen Inc. produces the MAGNATOR™ at our Ogden, Utah facility and uses larger capacity machining, forming and rolling; fabrication of formed parts to tolerances of ±.02; water jet/plasma cutting, welding (automatic, semi-automatic, and manual) per ASME Div. III, load and performance testing, dimensional and weld inspection, CGD of materials, painting/coating. The product is shipped to Zion, IL.
